Rethinking Book Covers of Children’s Classics

“In times when everyone is online, it’s difficult to attract young readers to classic novels.” That is the challenge that Vasava faced when Editorial Planeta approached them to ask them to design the covers of their collection “La Butxaca”, which includes some of the best-known classic children’s novels.

“Around the World in 80 Days”, “The Jungle Book”, “The Wizard of Oz” or “Alice in Wonderland” are some of the well-known titles included in this collection. The main challenge was “to do something that could encourage young readers to put down their phones and consoles and, instead, choose a good book”.

The concept they worked on was to incorporate illustrations into the letters of the book titles, creating bullets that could act as a kind of synopsis for each of the novels. In “Around the World in 80 Days,” the “O” becomes a hot air balloon and the rest of the letters show landscapes and other means of transport such as a train, a boat or an elephant.

For “Alice in Wonderland”, his crazy characters appear and interact between the different subjects of the title. In doing so, they combined comic book style with bright colour palettes to create a playful collection of books that any child would want to proudly display on their bookshelf.
